In skiing, after the months-long hiatus, I perennially rediscover the timing of last season within an hour or two my first day back. The motions of skiing are cruder, less critically precise. Conversely, during golf season, Im petrified to go longer than three days without touching a club lest a successful swing thought or groove evaporate. As Ben Hogan famously said, "Every day you miss practicing or playing is a day longer it takes to get good," a statement I believe is truer in golf than in any other discipline (though Ive never tried classical piano). I never walk away from a mountain disappointed in myself -- you dont ski a number, you just enjoy it -- but in golf my rounds that end in some degree of self-loathing are the majority. The flip side, of course, is that the successful rounds feel that much more fantastic.

A check for four thousand six hundred dollars has been handed over to the Possum Point Scholarship Fund. The check was handed over during brief ceremonies on Thursday afternoon by Mary Shave, whose brother Bob Hathorn was a frequent visitor to Sittee River two decades ago. The Possum Point Scholarship Fund was established in 1987 and has continuously provided funds for students of Sittee River village to attend high school and university. Managers of the Fund say that over the past 18 years the majority of the funds have come from a benefit golf tournament sponsored by the family of Bob Hathorn from the state of Vermont. An email from the group says that to date over seventy thousand U. S. dollars has been raised and more than 45 children from Sittee River have benefitted from the Scholarship.

The Vermont Technical College womens basketball team (NAIA D-II), sparked by former Danville star Eliza Wakefield, was nationally ranked in a number of categories: No. 2 in blocked shots per game (6. 789); No. 2 for 3-point defense per game (0. 245); No. 2 in goal pct. defense (0. 320); No. 11 in total rebound margin (6. 632).

Im thinking now of a 60-year-old local guy who golfed three to four times a week. His shoulder did what overused golfing shoulders tend to do: They go south. So did his gut when he "rested his shoulder" and everything else for a few months. He returned to the links with the cutest little pot belly I ever saw.

Take the early 30s to the early 50s during and following World War II and the 70s when higher costs and raging inflation curtailed the golf business and just about everything else. Golf courses built then tended to be hooks to sell real estate or year-round resorts like Stratton Mountain in Vermont.

Everybody seems to be crying about the sad sorry plight of the golf industry. Courses are closing, architectural staffs are being reduced, Tom Fazio is said to be spending more time on the course playing the game rather then plotting new holes (and reportedly enjoying it), rounds are down and the number of golfers is declining.

The procession wound its way to an equally fitting destination, nearby St. Peters, where Jackman was a communicant and faithful volunteer. Another 100 firefighters from all parts of Vermont and beyond flanked the walkway and saluted as Jackmans coffin was carried in, with his family members and his extended family the members of the Vergennes fire department following behind.

Outside of Vergennes, Jackman served multiple terms as the president of the Addison County Firefighters Association and two terms as the president of the Vermont Firefighters Association, and worked on many local and state committees. The state associations annual cadet academy is named after Jackman, and this fall county firefighters also voted to name their annual Cadet of the Year award after Jackman.
