2007-06-05 History News NetworkSomeone who studies leisure and tourism in American history is likely to encounter bewilderment, not to mention some humor, at their expense. I first encountered this as an M. A. student, studying tourism and how it had transformed Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The staff at the local historical society were baffled fur trappers, farmers, cowboys and Indians that was history. Skiers and auto tourists Not so much. Later, as a doctoral student, friends ribbed me about my research trips to places such as Palm Springs. Even though I visited numerous archives, conducted oral history interviews, and plowed through vast amounts of tourist ephemera, somehow it was difficult to prove that I had not simply reinvented dissertating as a vacation. - History news network weblogs blog

2007-06-22 Not quite roughing itMEDICINE BOW NATIONAL FOREST -- The sky quickly grew dim as a dark gray mass of storm clouds descended on the Snowy Range Mountains of southern Wyoming. The wind whipped up and, howling and swirling, it hurled golf-ball-sized chunks of ice sideways. Then the snow came, blankets of it. A line of cars filled with disappointed would-be campers on vacation the first week of June descended the slippery mountain road. The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest of central Wyoming and northern Colorado has 12 to 14 cabins available, depending on the time of year. Seven more cabins are located in other national forests around Wyoming. Most can be reserved year round. Many can only be reached on skis or with a snowmobile several months of the year. www.jacksonholestartrib.com
