We turned east at Salt Lake City and drove into Wyoming, the nations least populated state. About twenty miles into Wyoming on Interstate 80, we turned north along a desolate two-lane highway toward Jackson, the Teton Mountains, and Yellowstone National Park. The road was so straight and empty that we drove our van at nearly ninety miles an hour. Then suddenly the road gave way to construction which reduced it to oil-slicked dirt in both directions, and we were lucky if we could go ten miles per hour. As we got closer to Jackson, the desert-like terrain gave way to pine-covered hills and the Green River. In the nearby town of the same name, in 1869, Captain John Wesley Powell began his famous journey through the Grand Canyon, not imagining that the placid Green would soon become a foaming torrent of deadly rapids. mrzine.monthlyreview.org

The big guns will be coming to town on Jan. 5. Thats when the Lady Comets basketball team will entertain perennial national power Christ the King in a 2:30 p. m. tipoff. "My assistant Tom Kuzy saw them at a tournament a month or so ago and talked to their coach and all of a sudden, we had a date that worked for a game," head coach Vince Bucciarelli said. Drenched in fertilizer, planted in visually appealing but water-intensive grass species, and constantly cut to an unnaturally short length (cut grass requires even more water because of evaporation from its wounds), its as if the traditional golf course was designed to be as wasteful of water as was humanly possible. Worse yet, golf courses are increasingly becoming the focal points of new housing developments in the United States, which means that theres more of them every day. Opposing the construction of new golf courses can not only a method of preventing additional waste of water, but can also become an opportunity to create a broader www.worldchanging.com
