2006-11-09 Fort Collins Weekly - Centennial, Wyo.

Don and rsquo;t get me wrong - I and rsquo;m not saying that Centennial lays claim on even half the amenities of Fort Collins. I didn and rsquo;t see any place to shop for clothes, listen to the symphony, play golf or catch a movie. But if the quiet of the mountains means something to you, if you like to hunt and fish, snuggle up close to a real fire and wake to a winter wonderland underneath clear blue skies, Centennial is right up your alley. And unlike so many mountain get-a-ways like Jackson Hole, Aspen, Steamboat Springs or even Estes Park, Centennial retains its small town vibe amongst gorgeous views only minutes from Snowy Range Ski Resort, blue ribbon trout streams and hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails.

2006-11-26 G and F suggests hunting as a way to control city-dwelling deer

Sandrini said that so far, no Wyoming towns have implemented an urban hunt program. However, there is an annual pronghorn bow hunt at the Haycreek golf course in Wright. Sandrini said Game and Fish officials are more than willing to help coordinate such an effort, but the department wants cities and towns to assume the expense.

Sandrini said that as ungulate populations increase outside of Wyoming towns, more and more humans are building new homes where the animals never before had two-legged neighbors. And the new heavily manicured yards are often the greenest areas of the landscape. Somehow the fuzzy, warm feeling of spotting a buck deer from the bay window diminishes as gardens are denuded and trees are nibbled down to frayed sticks.

Details the relationship between a young lad and a wild horse (it was made into a 1943 movie starring Roddy McDowall); this new screen version turns the protagonist into a teenage girl, a gender switch that adds different dimensions to the story. Alison Lohman plays Katy, a strong-willed 16-year-old who locates a soulmate in a wild mustang wandering the acres on her family and rsquo;s Wyoming spread. Katy and rsquo;s dad Rob (Tim McGraw), already peeved that his daughter isn and rsquo;t capitalizing enough on her studies at a private school, forbids the girl to have any contact with the ill-tempered horse, but Katy ignores his mandate and proceeds to train the animal behind his back. It and rsquo;s refreshing to see an American family on screen that doesn and rsquo;t wallow in dysfunction: While there are plenty of conflicts, the overriding sense is

2006-12-07 Wildlife trust board approves 17 projects

The situation at the U Lazy U and the JH Hereford ranches in Teton County is complicated, said board member Meadows. The two ranch families used to support 50 to 70 elk wintering on the banks of the Snake River, but now have 400 to 500 elk. Neighbor Harrison Ford doesnt allow hunting, and a nearby golf course eliminated a hay field that used to support lots of elk. Less hunting and less nearby hay have led to rapid growth of the herd, which hammers the riparian area along the river, Meadows said.
