New River Gorge offers scenic outdoor challenges

Thank goodness, then, that there are so many recreational activities to choose from in this rugged, scenic corner of West Virginia. They include a world-class canopy tour that has you zipping and soaring through the treetops via a network of platforms and rope bridges, 120 feet above Mill Creek canyon, at speeds reaching 30 mph.

Nearly as heart-racing is the opportunity for us regular folk to walk legally and safely across the steel structure, the second-highest bridge in the United States, and the longest single-arch steel span bridge in the Western Hemisphere. (This is the only day of the year traffic is shut down. ) Still, youd better not look down if you have acrophobia, because this 70-foot-wide state highway sits a whopping 876 feet above the water. Its also spectacularly, oh-my-God-how-fast-can-I-get-across-it long, spanning 3,030 feet.

Golf wouldnt be golf without the green of the tees, fairways and of course putting greens. But as you approach the 11th hole of one West Virginia course you quickly recognize that the dominate colors here are red, white and blue.

I want every golfer who plays here to know that the freedom we have in this country is by blood and in some cases by life," says Jim Dodson a part-time greenskeeper and former Marine. He is the inspiration for the patriotic flavor of this otherwise ordinary but difficult par three.

The Golf Bearcats are the defending West Virginia Class AA State Champions, as well as the defending Class AA, Region II Champions for each of the last seven seasons.

Class AAA Bridgeport twice, Class AAA Robert C. Byrd, and a couple of Class AA teams -- Ravenswood and Ritchie County -- that always field some pretty good golf teams. That is a tough way to start the season, Crutchfield said. Especially for a young team that only has two returning lettermen. But, our kids seem to be hungry, and I think they are ready for action.

GRAFTON -- I looks like we are going to be a very young team, with a big target on our backs says Mike Crutchfield, head coach of the Grafton High School Golf Bearcats. After so much upheaval and uncertainty, Cassidy is hesitant to sell his house and move his wife and kids away from their close-knit extended family and closer to his new job. He said Target did initially talk with him about job possibilities closer to his West Virginia home, but nothing was available then and that possibility isnt a major factor in his decision-making.

Over the next few months, Cassidy was tasked with closing about one store a week, sometimes on very short notice, until his own job was eliminated at the end of January. He went back to West Virginia for a few months, overseeing a few of the video companys locations, all the while talking with Target about a potential position.
