Wadkins was 14 and competing in the state junior tournament. Six years later, Wadkins defeated Strange in the semifinals of the 1970 Virginia Amateur. Both attended Wake Forest and thrived on the PGA Tour, but their next head-to-head duel didnt transpire until 1990. Though they shared Virginia and Wake Forest roots, Strange and Wadkins were not close friends. Yet when he captained the U. S. Ryder Cup team in 1995, Wadkins paid Strange the ultimate compliment by picking him for the 12-man squad.
