2007-12-28 Citizens organize to preserve viewshed onThe Catawba Hospital Farm in 2005 was listed as endangered by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA Preservation Virginia). That happened after officials suggested the state should sell the Catawba Valley centerpiece. Land conservationists feared the farm would be turned into a golf course or housing development. Another interested organization is the Western Virginia Land Trust. Executive Director Roger Holnback is hopeful that this latest grassroots effort will turn the Catawba Hospital Farm back into a productive farm. If that farm was a golf course community youd say goodbye to Catawba as an (agricultural) community, Holnback said. So the neighbors have decided to help Tech save the farm. A movement that in 2003 came to the United States from Australia could help Virginia Tech save the Catawba Hospital Farm. The 400 acres, located in the midst of the Catawba Valley, is part of the majestic view offered from McAfees Knob, a popular stop on the Appalachian Trail.
