2006-10-31 Final round big numbers conclude fall season

Such was the case this past weekend as the Penn State womens golf team dropped three spots on the final day of competition at the Landfall Tradition to finish in 12th place, 65 shots behind co-champions Virginia and Michigan State.

When it comes to golf, theres a fine line between a great round and a not-so-great round. A couple of inches can be the difference between a birdie and a double-bogey or worse. Walking that fine line can be risky and when a golfer falls off the line, the results can be disheartening.

Agent of Change: Continued

Sport was Marks livelihood, but it was also his life. As unbelievable as it might sound today, Mark used to take cabs, unsupervised, back and forth to elementary school in his hometown of Chicago. He realized that if he got out of the cab a block away from home, just before the meter clicked, he could save a nickel a day--enough someday to buy a football helmet and some pads. One day, as he was crossing a busy street, Mark was struck by a car. He was lucky to have lived, but the doctors told his parents that he could never play contact sports. This devastated him. To assuage Marks disappointment and channel his natural competitiveness, his father bought him a set of golf clubs. He would become a good enough player to earn a golf scholarship to the College of William and Mary in Virginia, where he competed against a young golfer

A wild ending and a favorable tiebreaker earned the ninth-ranked Virginia womens golf team its first-ever tournament title. The Cavaliers took top honors at UNC Wilmingtons Landfall Tradition after finishing the 54-hole event tied with Michigan State at 902. The Cavaliers shot 306 during the final round while the Spartans turned in a score of 295.

I would have never dreamed that we would win our first tournament because I three-putted the final hole," said Wigger who entered the tournament ranked seventh nationally in Golfweeks individual standings. "That last putt was down hill and about two-and-a-half feet and there were foot marks all over the green and I didnt trust the line. Thankfully it went in. "

2006-10-30 News-GOLF: PGA OF AMERICA: Jamerson stays in control after 54 holes of the PGA Assistant Professional Championship

This round was very encouraging because I have figured out a way to get through my nightmare first round where I started at 6-over-par through my first four holes and finished with an even-par," said Lardon, a PGA Assistant Golf Professional at Escondido in Texas. "On No. 9, it was raining so hard that I could barely see in front to where the green was. I hit a drive into the right rough and did my best to get the ball towards the green and it landed on the front edge. I then two-putted from 80 feet for par and am very pleased to have been able to hang on for dear life during the three difficult holes during the intense rain. "
