Hoteliers such as Woody Crosby, president of Jordan Properties, helped organize the group after getting fed up with the destination falling behind others such as Virginia Beach, Va. , and Gatlinburg, Tenn. Jordan Properties operates about 606 rooms in Myrtle Beach at the Crown Reef Resort and Tropical Seas.

Since just after Labor Day, ads have bombarded potential travelers within 300 miles with a message that the beach - though not in its summer prime - is still ready to greet travelers with golf courses, shopping, festivals and, for the frugal travelers, lower off-season rates.

2006-10-08 Flying high on the golf course again

Goetcheus had just arrived back in his native Martinsville Friday from Virginia with three of his brothers: Lowell Dean, Dan and Tim. He talked about what it meant to play golf again at Martinsville Golf Club for the Fall Foliage Festival tournament this weekend, and why it had been so long since he had walked the green hills.

Goetcheus said he had little hope of ever playing golf again. He has very little feeling and no strength in his left hand and part of his lower arm. Hes learned to grip some with that hand, using a muscle in his forearm, but he cant feel his fingers. He said its all he needs to swing a golf club.
