BARBOURSVILLE -- Harold Payne rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole Sunday to defeat Phil Zambos and win the stroke-play championship in the West Virginia Senior Amateur at Esquire Golf Club.

Payne, who is from Hurricane, lashed a 5-iron on the 182-yard par-3 close to the hole after Zambos had put his tee shot about 20 feet left of the pin. Zambos left his putt short. Payne, winner of five West Virginia Amateur titles and four West Virginia Open crowns, stepped up and knocked the putt home to add that first state title as a senior to his resume.

Right now grass is still growing in around the outside edges of some fairways and its evident from a spin around the cart path that the course has just been constructed. But sprinklers are spraying water across all the greens, and just a few finishing touches and some golfers will turn it into a bustling new place to play.

Our city council makes me sick. TPC, whos whole purpose in life is to manage a golf course, cant make money at it. So, the city council decides to bail them out, but wants to keep TPC to run it Diezel (Harpo) "thinks city officials can profit from the course because they arent bound to the strict quality standards that come with life as a TPC course. " Then . "Hansen (Chico) says "Beach officials are negotiating with TPC to see whether the companys respected name can continue to be associated with the course". You cant have it both ways, guys. The Eagles are led by golfer Sam Wallace and his younger brother, Tyler. Their father, Sam Wallace Jr. , attended Wake Forest University on a golf scholarship.

The family affair is clearly working out for Jamestown. Sam Wallace shot a 73 and teammate Scott Larkin shot an even-par 72 in the teams fourth Bay Rivers District golf match held on the Pines Course at Fort Eustis on Tuesday.

This is certainly a noble use of the land, but it brings me to the following questions: Couldnt the city of Virginia Beach have found some other municipal property on which to build a halfway house Did they need to break up a circuit of nature trails, a scarce resource in Virginia Beach
