Vt. hero Phillips honored by alma mater-The Boston Globe

BUZZARDS BAY - Captain Richard Phillips, the former hostage of Somali pirates whose plight captivated a global audience, is planning to return to sea in September. But until then, he plans to spend time puttering on a lake near his Vermont home in his secondhand, 18-foot motorboat.

Since his rescue, Phillips has been enjoying the laid-back pace of his life in Underhill, Vt. , a small, rural community. In addition to his motorboat, Phillips is enjoying golf and three games of basketball a week.

Nodtvedt added that other auction items of interest to Hokie fans include a Virginia Tech football helmet signed by coach Frank Beamer, a Virginia Tech golf bag, a Virginia Tech basketball signed by coach Seth Greenberg, and a copy of "100 years of Virginia Tech Basketball" signed by Greenberg.

Vermonts top salesman remains optimistic: Times Argus Online

The commissioner said the typical tourist to Vermont is affluent, speculating that the states lack of what he jokingly called "honky tonk" destinations might be a factor. Vermonts visitors tend to be a little younger, with children, looking for family-oriented and outdoor activities like biking and hiking. The Vermont tourist is also looking for festivals and music, farmers markets, and those types of events.

While southern Vermont depends on visitors from New York and Connecticut, and central Vermont looks to the Boston market, northern Vermont is dependent on visitors from Quebec. A slow-down at the border could have a huge, negative impact on tourism in that part of the state.

Some of the ski trails cut by the corps form the foundation of well-known resorts, such as Cannon and Wildcat mountains in New Hampshire and Stowe Mountain in Vermont. The corps built log cabins atop several peaks, and adventurers can still spend the night in some of these rustic shelters, such as the Stone Hut near the summit of Mount Mansfield, Vermonts highest peak. Despite a lack of electricity and only a wood stove for heat, the views from 3,350 feet and the opportunity for solitary early-morning runs make the Stone Hut a popular wintertime draw.

Aronsson, a former four-sport standout at Rice Memorial High, shot a final round 68 to win the Vermont Womens Amateur at the Burlington Country Club. Aronsson, a senior at the University of Washington, led from start to finish and carded a three round total of 211 good enough for a 12 stroke victory. The final round of 68 by Aronsson ties the record set by Holly Reynolds in 1992 at the Manchester Country Club. Earlier in the month Aronsson reached match play at the U. S. The office on the ground floor of Rutland Country Clubs clubhouse is the nerve center of the Vermont Golf Association, of which Bassett is the longtime executive director. Golf has a relatively short season in Vermont but that doesnt mean Bassett has six months off every year. Far from it. While its not a fulltime job once courses are closed and everyones clubs are put away, Bassett is still busy working behind the scenes. He has schedules to set, arrangements to make, inquires to satisfy and entry fees to take because, within every offseason burns the ember of the season to come.

Hes good at a lot of things," Parsons said. "Hes funny. Hes engaging. He is clearly able to articulate a more moderate or conservative view than the Legislature, which is pretty blue, pretty Democratic. Thats great. Individual people have voted for that balance, and I think its good, personally. Has he been a good governor I think most Vermonters would say hes been reasonably good. Vetoing the gay marriage bill is clearly something a majority of Vermonters were vocally opposed to. Are most Vermonters in favor of gay marriage Our polls indicate its right down the middle. Fifty-fifty. Is he personally a decent guy Yes. Is he a little too hard-line on some things I think so. There are issues where he has been more to the right than the rest of the state would like. But has he been dishonest I cant say
