Today, most of the diagonal public parking spaces in Vermont Canyon near its trailheads are coned off. The oak-shaded picnic area opposite the Greek at the corner of Commonwealth Canyon and Vermont Canyon is closed and locked. The gate to the large picnic/play lawn north of the Greek is drawn and locked. Walking/hiking/running the trails, or beating the heat in the picnic areas is a no-go from now until Sunday. 2008-06-17 Heavy rains flood downtown Rutland The Burlington Free PressSlow moving thunderstorms navigating through very humid air caused the local flooding, meteorologists said. Saturdays storms came just four days after other thunderstorms caused widespread wind damage in Vermont and pelted some communities with hail the size of golf balls. In Rutland, as many as 80 properties were damaged, most with basement flooding but some with water in living areas, Vermont Emergency Management reported. The flooding was concentrated on and near Clover Street, and in the citys downtown. The flooding forced 11 families to evacuate, emergency officials said. Some stayed with family and friends, while the American Red Cross sheltered at least 13 people at the Leahy Center at Rutland Regional Hospital, emergency officials said.
