2007-10-19 Former AG James Oakes dead at 83: Rutland Herald OnlineA home in Irasburg was owned by a deputy clerk of the Vermont Supreme Court. She had rented it to a black minister, the Rev. Johnson, and his family . Some redneck had shot out some windows in the Irasburg house. The Rev. Johnson had fired a few shots at the car that the redneck was driving, but it was not known whether any of the shots had hit the car. Saying that we dont want Vermont to be another Mississippi, I directed the state police to give the Rev. Johnson and his family 24-hour protection. My wife drove to Irasburg from Guilford and I went to the Irasburg house directly from Burlington (where he had been campaigning). We helped the family by doing dishes and the like, but it was to show our support. Little did I know that there would be a big backlash, particularly in the Northeast Kingdom, where the people had been less Rutland Herald Online - Vermont election news, news coverage, local news, state government, sports, classifieds - Rutland herald rutland vermont news daily news sports obituaries editorial events community calendar headlines classifieds real estate

2007-10-06 American Chronicle: The Perfect Wedding and Romantic Get-Away Destination in Rural Vermont-The Inn at WestonNow, although the Town of Weston may appear as an insignificant speck on a map of Vermont, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The town boasts some very attractive restored buildings, particularly surrounding its leafy oval Town Green. You have the Weston Playhouse that rightfully advertises itself as hosting world-class theater in the heart of Vermont. The origins of its first professional production dates back to 1937 and unfortunately the original theater succumbed to a fire in 1962. However, in 1963 the theater was once again resurrected with its Greek Revival faade fully restored. www.americanchronicle.com - Vermont Weston Inn at Weston Romantic Destinations Weddings Honeymoons

2007-10-19 Lets support local tourism: Rutland Herald OnlineBack in the 70s and early 80s the Rutland/Killington region of Vermont emerged as the premier tourist area of the state and was the envy of the other areas as cutting edge marketing by the Killington Ski Area, local chambers of commerce and businesses were successful in bringing both winter and summer visitors to our region. We boasted new hotels, golf courses, restaurants and vacation homes, and everyone prospered. Somewhere along the way things changed as Killington and Pico were sold to the American Ski Co. , which took away local control of marketing and became mired in debt and unable to lead us in marketing the region. The local population and businesses in most cases failed to support summer events like the Killington Horse Show, the Futures Golf Tournament, the Killington Stage Race, numerous music events, the Renaissance Festival, and the Green Mountain Guild, along with the recent announcement of the demise of Rutlands First Night with both money and volunteers. Other areas of the state picked our pockets as Stowe and Burlington and other areas prospered as we floundered. Terms of the abandoned plea deal were not made public during the Wednesday afternoon hearing in Vermont District Court in Burlington, but defense attorney Paul Jarvis told the judge he and prosecutors were "about two years apart" on the prison sentence. www.burlingtonfreepress.com

He has worked at ski resorts for 35 years, the last five years as owner and president of Bolton Valley Resort in Vermont. He also has served as president of Stratton Resort in Vermont, as president of the Olympic Regional Development Authority in Lake Placid, N. Y. , and as general manager of Breckenridge Resort in Colorado. One principle behind the project, DeMay said, was that skiing and golf are vital and he said the ski areas facilities would be expanded as user demand rose. He also said the golf course would be completely renovated so it would be both challenging and suitable for players of all calibers. There will also be a village core to serve as the heart of the community. www.citizen.com
