Vermont Golf2010-03-12 From toxic plume to green energyThe height of wind turbine poles and the size of the blades can vary widely. Smaller poles to power individual residences can reach 18 feet in height. Eve Frankel, spokeswoman for Northern Power Systems, a Vermont-based wind turbine manufacturer, said her companys turbine poles average about 121 feet tall, with the sweep of the blades extending up to 156 feet. Wind turbine towers for large energy production from other companies can reach up to 300 feet tall while the blades can extend up another 100 to 150 feet. Frankel said a group of Vermont legislators acknowledged the potential disruption of wind turbines close to developed areas with a bill requiring wind turbines to be set back more than a mile from occupied buildings, and setting limits on noise and vibration. Some residents who live in the neighborhood bordering the site are intrigued with the idea of turning a polluted property into a green facility. But many others, who are already dealing with contamination that has spread from the DuPont site through their neighborhood, are aghast at the prospect of towering wind turbines near their homes.
