2006-09-29 The Golfers World: Archives

I may be biased from living in New England, but when it comes to places to see fall foliage, or "natures fireworks," New England, and Vermont and New Hampshire in particular, are the best anywhere. However, if you want to mix fall foliage with world-class golf, Michigan wins hands down. Locals already know this, but it amazes me how ignorant many other traveling golfers remain about the array of great courses in Michigan, which has very good golf all over the place. Fantastic architects new (Tom Doak) and old (Alister MacKenzie) are well represented, and homegrown designer Arthur Hills, who has built all over the globe, has his most famous achievement, the highly ranked Bay Harbour on the shores of Lake Michigan.

We also need to send out a big thank you to Andre Boudreau, Mike Smith, Chip Dillon, Brian Boudreau, Dean Pelkey, the Vermont Disc Golf Club, Kevin Howrigan, Tim Hurlbutt, Jeff Young, and Scott Coolidge as a tremendous amount of work was done this past Saturday at Hardack in efforts to clear an over grown drainage ditch and to clear some new trails. Chain saws, brush cutters, chippers and other various tools were put to full use dropping trees and brush all day in anticipation of over 125 BFA students, coaches and parents from the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman Boys and Girls Soccer and Cross Country teams who arrived Sunday morning and gave 3. 5 hours of hard labor to help clean up and chip all the downed trees and brush. A fantastic job was done by all, THANK YOU SO

2006-09-25 Times Argus: Vermont News and Information

At Bolton Flats, she stops the car next to a field that recently was a golf driving range. Here, she says, archeologists found two small hunting camps. Arrow points and a hearth area with burned bones reveal that Native Americans made small hunting camps in the area. Archaeologists date the camps to 1600 and 750 AD. Such hunting sites are more common than you might think. Though the Native American population was never huge in Vermont probably numbering in the thousands, not the tens of thousands they did live in this territory for a long time: for nearly 12,000 years. "They traveled around the state during all seasons, exploiting various microenvironments," she said. "That makes for an awful lot of sites, most of which we have never found. "

2006-09-06 Seven Days: Mod Squad

The future of housing in Vermont, and elsewhere, may look a lot like this ready-made real estate. Unlike conventionally built houses, modular, or system-built, homes are constructed almost entirely indoors in a climate-controlled factory, using the cost efficiencies and quality controls of an assembly line. Modulars are typically less expensive, faster to build and more energy-efficient than other homes, but theyre otherwise indistinguishable. That makes them an attractive alternative for advocates of affordable housing. On the downside, they may also represent a threat to the future of Vermonts traditional building trades, as construction jobs are outsourced to modular-home factories elsewhere in the country.

2006-09-08 CANOE -- CNEWS - Canada: List of the Canadian victims of 9/11

The 52-year-old Glasgow native moved to Toronto in 1977 to work as an insurance broker. He moved to Montreal in 1986 after marrying his wife, Brenda. McArthur became a Canadian citizen and worked as a deputy managing director at Aon Corp. A memorial service was held for McArthur, a keen golfer, at a New Jersey golf course. McArthur loved the game, despite his dubious achievements on the golf course, according to Brenda. She set up the Colin McArthur Postgraduate Scholarship at his alma mater, the University of Glasgow, for students who lost a parent or guardian in the Sept. 11 attacks. Brenda, 49, remarried a year ago and planned to mark the fifth anniversary privately at home.

Andrea Brown of Williston who was the champion in 2004, Kristin Mahoney of Rutland who was the runner-up in 2004, and Mari Harter of Orleans could also be strong contenders in this years tournament.
