2010-07-25 Canadian Tour Will Help USGA Test Shorter Golf Balls

Golf is never returning to persimmon drivers or wound, balata balls. Back in 2005, the USGA first contacted ball manufacturers about producing prototype balls that fly shorter distances. At that time, the USGA said it was looking for a 5- to 8-percent decrease in distance, which is far more reasonable than 10-20 percent and probably represents a good guess at the distance decrease that will be observed by the Canadian Tour testers.

A while back the USGA asked several golf ball manufacturers to create prototype balls that dont fly as far as the balls currently on the market. The request wasnt a prelude to any rules changes, the USGA told manufacturers, just a chance to collect and compare data.

2010-07-20 Golf Course Industry Magazine : USGA: Feeling the heat

Dr. Derek Settle (Chicago District Golf Assoc. ) and I, along with a number of turfgrass managers, have shared concerns that the turfgrasses were not well prepared for a return to typical summer conditions. Perhaps unaware of winterkill on putting greens in the region, golfers heading out to play in the spring were not anticipating damage that was still evident on some of the greens. Poorly-drained, native soil greens with a mixed stand of Poa annua and creeping bentgrass undoubtedly suffered the worst winter injury, with some greens being reseeded or even resodded in their entirety.

2010-07-12 GOLF ROUNDUP: Ailing Creamer leads at U. S. Womens Open

Creamer, who has eight top-10 finishes in majors at age 23 but has yet to win one, is playing in only her fourth tournament since sitting out four months to surgically repair a hyperextended joint. The injury is so painful she limits her practice shots because she cant stand the constant pounding of her golf club striking the ground.

Under for the tournament with five holes remaining in a third round that will be completed this morning. Ward, a four-time LPGA Tour winner, has only No. 18 to play. Suzann Pettersen is four back with four holes to go while 15-year-old Alexis Thompson, Amy Yang and Brittany Lang are five back. Only Thompson completed the third round.

2010-07-08 Preview and Picks from the John Deere

The USGA has always been the stingiest in giving exemptions out, they have a bit of a mean streak in which they like to see players qualify and David Fay, USGA executive director, has always been on the record as saying that half of the U. S. Open should be open to all, via qualifying. So there is no real method in place of giving a really hot player a spot, like what happened to Rose. Now of the other majors, the PGA is the easiest to get into. All you have to do is just sniff the top-100 of the world rankings, especially the week before the event and that will get you in because the PGA has always had the reputation of trying to buy the best field in golf for the year. By giving exemptions to all top-100 players they always get the best field on paper. The Masters may have the best method of getting hot players into there

2010-07-04 For AT and T National, Aronimink Is a Gem

Because the 2013 United States Open will be played less than 10 miles to the east at Merion Golf Club, and the 2016 Open will be played at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh, the chances Aronimink will be considered for the 2018, and rsquo;19 or and rsquo;20 Opens are remote. The course will probably have better luck trying for the P. G. A. Championship for those years, and the fact the club was able to turn a profit with the 2003 P. G. A. Senior Championship is another selling point.

2010-07-02 No Jamie Farr in 2011

Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic Tournament Director Judd Silverman and the LPGA announced on Tuesday that the tournament would take a one year hiatus in 2011. The Jamie Farr will return in 2012 with a multi year contract. Although a contract with the LPGA to hold the 2011 tournament had not been signed it was widely expected that the golf tournament would be held as normal.

Inverness Country Club in Toledo will host the USGA Senior Open in late . Mr. Silverman noted that hosting both the LPGA event normally held over the July 4th weekend and the USGA Senior Open so close together would stretch the resources of the community and would make it difficult to obtain adequate sponsors, as well as, volunteers to efficiently run both tournaments.

2010-07-01 Classic venue with major feelserves astemporary AT and T host

Fortunately the PGA TOUR had thought this all through. They had another world-class course in mind and in 2008 it was announced that in 2010 and 2011 ATandT National would move to the Philadelphia area and be hosted by Aronimink Golf Club. Not a discouraging word was heard and the golf world rejoiced a bit that professional golf would be returning to Philly for the first time in eight years and would be revisiting another classic venue.

2010-06-26 Has the Open become too accommodating:Local Knowledge: Golf Digest

Beginning in 2005, with the exception of Woods victory at Torrey Pines two years ago, the toughest test in golf has been won by a series of less-heralded players, some with no pedigree whatsoever on the PGA Tour," Elling writes. "In fact, throw out the career victory total of Woods -- who, mind you, required 19 playoff holes to defeat journeyman Rocco Mediate -- and the five other winners combined had amassed three U. S. tour wins before winning the Open. "

Mike Davis, the USGAs senior director rules and competition, generally has been applauded for his U. S. Open setups, but have they served to negate some of the advantages the games best players have and allowed lesser lights to win Steve Elling of makes a compelling argument that that is the case, quoting Tiger Woods, who said, Hes given more. - Angel Cabrera Graeme McDowell Michael Campbell Mike Davis Tiger Woods U.
