2007-03-28 Mercury: Did you knowHis teammates were Ernie Els and Retief Goosen. David continued to play in South Africa in the northern hemisphere winter, but like other leading South African golfers he has spent far more time playing internationally. In line with many other Commonwealth golfers his first move abroad was to the European Tour which he played from 1982 to 1984. From 1985 he was primarily on the U. S. based PGA Tour, where he went on to win 10 tournaments, the most prestigious of which was the 1989 World Series of Golf which he won by defeating Ben Crenshaw at the second playoff hole. He made the top 10 on the PGA Tour money list twice, placing ninth in 1988 and fifth in 1993. He won the Million Dollar at Sun City in 1989 and 1990. His rival now is Greg Norman as they have both entered the wine business. David names his wines after golf legends such as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. 2007-04-04 Big Easy facing hard times at the Masters Breaking news Guardian Unlimited SportWhile Elss number five world ranking, 15 PGA Tour titles and a pair of runner-up finishes at Augusta National mark him out as a contender, his recent performances offer little hint that tailors will be sizing up a green jacket for the big South African come Sunday. Playing a practice round on Tuesday with three-times Masters champion Gary Player, Elss form received the stamp of approval from the South African golf great. Els has not celebrated victory in the U. S since winning three times in 2004 and would have finished last season without a title for the first time since 1991 if he had not returned home to capture the South African Open in November. sport.guardian.co.uk
2007-03-20 Singh has that zing - The Boston GlobePassionate as he may be about Palmers signature event -- "I really wanted to win this one," he said -- Singh hardly sweated out his past failures here. More disconcerting is the way things have gone in the past year, for while younger internationals had pushed past him in the world rankings (Aussies Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy came into the week Nos. 4 and 7, Swedens Henrik Stenson was No. 5) or pushed close behind (Englishmen Luke Donald and Paul Casey were 11 and 13, respectively, South African Trevor Immelman 12th), Singh had fallen to ninth, even though as recently as the spring of 2005 he had supplanted Woods as No. 1. www.boston.com
2007-03-23 SuperGolfThe third Esperito Santos team member, Stacy Bregman, turned professional after that famous day and while failing to claim her maiden professional victory walked away with the Ladies African Tour Order of Merit title. The 20-year-old accumulated R80 000 plus and has put herself in pole position for a place in the Womens World Cup team along with Simon. Ashleigh has been instrumental in motivating young girls to take to the fairways and there are a whole new crop of players coming through the ranks, as young as eight, competing in Little Kids Golf tournaments for a chance to participate in the US Kids Golf Championship later this year. www.supergolf.co.za
