2009-07-20 British Open - Left Field Blogs ( The Capital)

I hope that with the charity golf season quickly coming up on us that folks take note of what some families and organizations are going through as they put together charity golf tournaments to raise money and awareness for whatever their cause may be. The Tony "Moose" Villella Tournament and the Monsignor John F. Hogan Tournament will be taking place soon, each at Bowie Golf and Country Club.

That outburst of virtual laughter is for all the kids who woke up this morning to watch Saturday cartoons on NBC and found the live coverage of the British Open golf championship. Luckily, these days the kids have more options like Nick Toons, Boomerang and Disney Channel to catch cartoons. But the idea of golf replacing cartoons made me smile.

The Helping Hands Foundation, which helps give international patients access to different surgical procedures, arranged for Poma and her father, Dr. Ursus Javier Laura, to come to Maryland for surgery at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Tuesday night, a team of doctors performed an eight-hour surgery that transplanted Pomas toe to the thumb position on her right hand.

Police said Lara was driving a 1997 Volkswagen Golf north on Brock Bridge around 1:15 p. m. when he crossed over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, nearly striking cars in those lanes. He apparently lost control of the vehicle, crossed back into the northbound lane and hit a utility pole off the right side of the road.
