BEAVER CREEK (AP) - A teenager was killed after he became trapped under a forklift that overturned at the Beaver Creek Country Club. Family members identified the victim as Nevin Petre of Mapleville. He was helping his father remove a tree from the golf course. Rod Steiner, a country club employee, says Petre was operating the forklift at about 1 p. m. on Thursday as his father, Samuel, sawed the tree. Steiner says the tree, which was rotten on the inside, fell sooner than expected, making the forklift turn over and pinning Nevin Petre underneath the cab. Mount Aetna Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Chief Tony Veney says Nevin Petre was taken to Washington County Hospital. Rhonda Wardlaw, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health, says the agency is investigating the incident.

We dont need to look at ages-old examples of racism to know it exists. We dont need to look to Louisiana and point to the so-called Jena 6 as an example of a system gone wrong. Having a noose hang on a tree near the Nyumburu Cultural Center on the University of Maryland campus should be enough of an example. If anyone is looking for a national example, the brouhaha over Golf Channel analyst Kelly Tilghmans "noose" comment about Tiger Woods brought another examination of Tilghmans motives and our own racial attitudes.
