2006-11-04 Interview: Bryans Road Author, Robert Westfield Returns to Maryland

Family and friends My parents, who lived here for over 20 years, recently retired and now live on a golf course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina but they visit Maryland frequently. My brother is in L. A. I still have many friends of the family, former church members and classmates and teachers as well. Its not a fluke that I dedicated "Suspension" to Pete Troiano, who was my Latin and English teacher at Lackey High School. He was instrumental in setting me on the path to New York and writing. Im looking forward to my trip to Maryland in November and see it as a real homecoming. I remember setting out to be "a writer in the Big City" and to return as a published novelist is validation for that 18-year-old with a dream.

2006-11-03 Finchem Gives Yearly State-of-the-Game Analysis

We will begin the FedEx Cup at the Mercedes Benz Championship in Hawaii. It will provide players the opportunity to accumulate points throughout the year going through the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, which is the weekend after the PGA Championship. At that point we will take that points list and convert it and re seed it based on finishing position in Greensboro to begin the playoffs -- four weeks of playoffs played on good golf courses in big markets, starting with Barclays Classic in New York, going to the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston and BMW Championship, which will be in Chicago and alternate out of Chicago, and then back here to Atlanta for the Tour Championship presented by Coca Cola.

2006-11-03 Hawkins on Golf: Crunched by the numbers

Across the board, courses rated harder in Connecticut than Maryland. A in the Nutmeg State is fairly common. Three hundred miles to the south, its rare to find a venue with an over-par rating and a slope in the 130s. What does it all mean Not much, although it does suggest that handicaps kept by those in Connecticut are a bit more vulnerable because theyre slightly inflated, which makes perfect sense to me. I couldnt play to my number in Maryland. In a three-club wind, I had no chance.

Our first intent as a golf company was to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Alan Shepherds shot," said Bill Day, chief operating officer at Element 21. He added that Nasa and the Russian Space Agency had given the project their blessing. Mr Day would not say how much the golf shot had cost, but preparing for it has taken considerable effort. Cosmonaut Tyurin received more than three days" of training, including practice swings underwater and on a vomit comet" flight, which produces weightless conditions for a few seconds.

In addition to the Big 12 meet, the Jayhawks will also travel to Minneapolis, Minn. , for the NCAA Championships. These two meets are what the team will use to gauge its success and have prepared for throughout the summer training and fall tournaments. City to review golf operations

Another idea, which has not resonated well with the nearby neighbors, is to convert Palo Verde Golf Course, at 15th and Maryland avenues, into a city park. Councilwoman Peggy Bilsten suggested selling the course to developers and using the money to pay off the debt.

Why would you build a golf course in 2000 when Phoenix was already one of the most densely populated areas with golf courses It has more courses per capita than any other market in the country. I cant imagine that anyone thought there werent enough golf holes in Phoenix. "

2006-11-23 Sports - Annapolis Powell thrives in special Terps role

COLLEGE PARK - In the Maryland football media guide, Annapolis Greg Powell is listed as a senior wide receiver. But hes never lined up on the flank for a single play from scrimmage. Instead, hes made his contribution as one of the anonymous grunts on special teams. Its not glamorous work, to say the least. The only time hes likely to run into the end zone is on a touchback.

Powell started at the bottom at Maryland and his climb was neither quick nor easy. He began his college career on the scout team that emulated opponents plays for the 2003 Gator Bowl squad. He recalls getting his first pat on the back one day at practice when he put a good block on linebacker Shawne Merriman, now one of the top defensive players in the National Football League.
