Maryland Golf 20062006-08-03 Kays Perseverance Pays Off in Worsham MemorialHilary Lawson won her third consecutive Middle Atlantic Golf Association junior girls championship last Friday at Country Club of Fairfax. Lawson, a 17-year-old senior at Magruder who finished second at the Maryland State Golf Associations junior girls championship the previous day, shot a 4-over-par 77 to win by three strokes over Kelly Lynch, 16, of Severna Park. Lynch also finished runner-up to Lawson last year. Lawson became only the second golfer to win three titles in a row in this event. Sarah LeBrun of Owings Mills also won three titles from 1981 to 83. Because the event was rained out in June, it was reduced from 36 holes to 18. After starting the day three strokes behind the leader in the final round of the 55th Bubby Worsham Memorial, Devin Kay thought he was out of contention when he bogeyed four consecutive holes on the back nine. Turns out, he wasnt the only one having problems. Kay, an All-Met from Churchill, ended.

He never worried about schoolwork in high school and needed to take the SAT twice to qualify at Maryland; in college, hes received academic honors and is now considering a double major in kinesiology and business. He dabbled in community service in high school; now, hes in the process of forming his own charity to help children with medical problems. He has started to plan a charity golf tournament scheduled for next summer, and he has continued a friendship with Katie Hull, a 12-year-old Lancaster girl who has cerebral palsy. Marylands Jordan Steffy remains the backup quarterback but is convinced hell be starting before his three years of remaining eligibility are up.
