2006-08-07 Md. open-space program lags behind development

Supporters of that approach see the situation as tailor-made for Marylands Program Open Space, a pioneering effort enacted more than 30 years ago that requires money be set aside from each real estate transaction to finance the purchase of land for public use: ball fields, playgrounds and parks. But there is no guarantee that the Barrans property will become a park.

Local officials say the states recreational acreage goal is simplistic and doesnt properly credit state and federal parks that may also be available to residents. Nor does the state count privately owned ball fields or golf courses -- a significant chunk of acreage in Howard County, for instance, where the private Columbia Association maintains recreational complexes for the planned community of nearly 100,000 people.

2006-08-05 Major League Baseball : News : Left Field

I loved growing up in Maryland. There are two teams now in the area, the Orioles and Nationals, so the baseball part of things is definitely getting more interesting. I was an Orioles fan growing up. I loved going to Camden Yards and watching Cal Ripken and Eddie Murray play. My whole family rooted for the Orioles, my parents still do, unless they play the Rangers.

Is Augusta National, no doubt. I got a chance to play that a few years back and our owner, Mr. Hicks, is a member, so hopefully we keep winning and go to a World Series, maybe hell bring the whole team out there one day. Augusta is the Yankee Stadium of American golf, and to be able to go inside those gates and to play a course that is probably the most historic course in the whole world was a lot of fun.

2006-08-04 Senior-Laden Terps Prepare for Fall Season :: Seven seniors to battle to keep NCAA string alive

Maryland will play its toughest fall schedule ever, according to Coach Hanna. The fall season opens Sept. 11 and 12 at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate and will take the Terps to three new events on the fall schedule. Maryland will make its first appearance in recent years at the Xavier Invitational, the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic and the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N. C. , as part of its five-event fall slate.

Played in two fall events for the Terps in 2005-06, but improved to claim the No. 5 spot in Marylands final four events in the spring. He finished the spring with one top-10 finish - a tie for seventh at the Cavalier Classic that was won by Maryland - and had a 74. 9 scoring average through the season. Five of his 20 rounds on the year were at par or better.

2006-08-03 Random Rodricks: Feds ask for Blackwater delay

Says it has collected more than 25,000 signatures in a petition drive aimed at stopping the development, outside of Cambridge, and in recent testimony before the Maryland agency that will act on the 2,700-home resort, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service asked for a delay for further environmental impact studies. It wants the developer to pay the cost of any future environmental damage, too. The federal agency earlier had not taken a position on the Blackwater proposal.
