2006-08-07 Md. open-space program lags behind developmentSupporters of that approach see the situation as tailor-made for Marylands Program Open Space, a pioneering effort enacted more than 30 years ago that requires money be set aside from each real estate transaction to finance the purchase of land for public use: ball fields, playgrounds and parks. But there is no guarantee that the Barrans property will become a park. Local officials say the states recreational acreage goal is simplistic and doesnt properly credit state and federal parks that may also be available to residents. Nor does the state count privately owned ball fields or golf courses -- a significant chunk of acreage in Howard County, for instance, where the private Columbia Association maintains recreational complexes for the planned community of nearly 100,000 people. 2006-08-05 Major League Baseball : News : Left FieldI loved growing up in Maryland. There are two teams now in the area, the Orioles and Nationals, so the baseball part of things is definitely getting more interesting. I was an Orioles fan growing up. I loved going to Camden Yards and watching Cal Ripken and Eddie Murray play. My whole family rooted for the Orioles, my parents still do, unless they play the Rangers. Is Augusta National, no doubt. I got a chance to play that a few years back and our owner, Mr. Hicks, is a member, so hopefully we keep winning and go to a World Series, maybe hell bring the whole team out there one day. Augusta is the Yankee Stadium of American golf, and to be able to go inside those gates and to play a course that is probably the most historic course in the whole world was a lot of fun.
