In 1899, Tom Bendelow--a 30-year-old Scotsman and former typesetter, who would eventually design 650 golf courses in North America--expanded Van Cortlandt to 18 holes. By 1920, according to the Parks Department, the course was handling as many as 5,000 golfers a week.
